Smart goals are reminders about the course of action that you need to take, as you walk to your work desk each morning. Your discussions for a raise or promotion are initiated on this sheet of paper. The realistic goals set and the time frame determined should be displayed in areas that you frequent through the course of the day. It is important to note that keeping your goals realistic gives you a stronger chance to fulfill them. Keep your list of goals in places where you will be reminded of them everyday. The list will automatically help you take even the smallest of steps in the direction of meeting those goals. Smart goal setting for your career within a time frame

Goal setting should be designed within a time frame. Don’t be vague. Tip the hat over the fence and give yourself dead lines. At the same time, give yourself ample of time to reach each of the targets. The time frame should be such that it motivates you to look at taking on extra work, learning new skills, earning certifications and attending workshops and updated orientations within the industry. The time frame also enables you to understand and plan the steps needed to reach each of the goals. This gives you the scope to recognize opportunities and stay motivated.

Plan Ahead, revise and review

You should be able to plan ahead for each of the goals. You should identify the specific steps required to reach out to the different goals and write them down. This will help you to achieve the goals when and as, by taking the necessary steps. You should periodically revise your goals and segregate those met and those yet to be achieved. This will ensure that you remain enthusiastic about the exercise and stay excited, all through the course of action. Review the list of goals whenever possible and strike out the completed tasks. Make changes if necessary. Add new goals to pursue your dreams and passions with even more determination.

The goal setting exercises for a career involve a lot of identification with specific aims and ambitions. You cannot be scattered in thought and expect to walk towards a particular goal. The current level of competition and the scarcity of good candidates for top-notch positions have made goal setting even more important. Your career graph will attain the required altitude only with the right attitude. A methodical approach will ensure that your career graph is more focused and stream lined. Goal setting for a career move is the best way to make your work station a potential playground everyday!

Firm poised to ease BPL’s entry into Europe

Two former vice presidents of reportedly Europe ’s largest triple play firm started a BPL integrator/operator called Smartgrid2.

Tom Walsh and Patricia McGrath were executives at UPC Broadband — now owned by Liberty Global. The Netherlands-based firm grew from a 200-user cable modem trial network in Amsterdam in the mid 90s to a customer base of over 1.5 million cable broadband subscribers in 14 countries in 2002. Walsh was vice president of engineering and then operations and McGrath was vice president of network planning and implementation.

The two left UPC and in 2005 they started Smartgrid2 in Ireland . They looked at various alternative technologies and soon found BPL.Smartgrid2 is convinced BPL is the technology it had been looking for and set its sights on deploying BPL for utility services and retail triple play throughout Europe .

Walsh and McGrath spoke to us Thursday from their headquarters in County Kerry in Southwest Ireland .Walsh is CTO and McGrath is director.“ Europe will offer incredible opportunity for ‘smart grid’ technology players for the next 10 years,” said Walsh. He believes the key for BPL technology firms to succeed in Europe will be to maintain a presence without draining resources and funds.

Smartgrid2 ( www.smartgrid2.com ) is set up to help. The firm’s been trying to land BPL projects with utilities but like everywhere, European utilities have resisted.

EU’s pushing BPL

“Utilities have been slow to come to the table so far — but here in Europe the EU is actively pushing the technology,” said Walsh. Why is the government of Europe pushing BPL?

A BPL initiative is underway to “overcome the energy challenges presented by a rapidly expanding [EU] membership where demand is outstripping supply,” Walsh reported. He and McGrath are involved in that government effort and they’re confident “it will happen,” she added. The firm wants to introduce to Europe some of the main players in the BPL world “that have existing and proven technologies and proven business cases so that we can jump start some technology trials.

“We believe that some of the strongest players have a great opportunity to be in at the beginning” — with a real possibility to turn those trials into commercial deployments.

Smartgrid2 hopes to avoid “open-ended science experiments — that I think have been some people’s experience in the past,” said McGrath. Some of the utilities in the EU are trying to “reinvent the wheel,” she added — and Smartgrid2 wants to show them wheels are “already out there,” she added.

The challenge for Smartgrid2 is to make deals with international BPL technology firms including US firms and represent them in Europe .

The name says it all

Smartgrid2 learned early that utilities aren’t usually interested in hype about the broadband business. True to its name, the firm is focused on utility applications and sees that market offering huge potential. Commercial broadband is a side benefit that can be delivered by firms that lease bandwidth from the utility, he noted.

But the need for the 21st century smart grid is urgent. The EU grew from 15 to 27 countries in the last 3 years, Walsh reminded. Many have rapidly growing economies that are putting incredible demand on power grids.

These states have limited raw resources for energy production and a lack of organization in the power interconnection between countries. The EU doesn’t have a system to manage the grid or know “who’s producing power” and who’s using it.

“Smart grid efficiency and control are finally being seen as the way to integrate and manage the various networks” — and cut reliance on generators outside the Union , said Walsh.

Meanwhile less developed nations in the EU are trying to build their economies and getting access to broadband is a key ingredient. “Pilot projects are being planned to take the best existing solutions and test them for commercial roll-outs throughout Europe .”

Walsh expects BPL’s role to expand as green power generation projects such as home-based generation, solar panels, wind farms, tidal power and more start populating the grid. Interconnection with those projects will make managing the reliability of the grid ever more complicated — and some look to BPL as an obvious answer to managing that complexity.

They saw cable get smart

BPL reminds Walsh of the early days of cable. People in 1997 told him cable modem networks “couldn’t happen, it wouldn’t work — we were dreaming.” BPL is in roughly the same position as cable was then — with a lack of standards, some engineering challenges in creating networks plus it’s got its nay sayers.

The broadband boom in Europe was similar to “the wave that’s building for smart grids. ”Cable traditionally was a one-way, wire-based distribution network. Sounds familiar.

Cable modem technology introduced tremendous advantages by adding IP to those networks.

Suddenly the operator could see the condition of every piece of gear on the network all the way to the customer’s modem.

That gave Walsh a brand new kind of power in making financial decisions. He could make choices on where to spend money on the network — based not on which technology officer in field wrote the most compelling request, “but on actual live statistics,” he stressed.

His operational crews — that had only ever been reactive — could now act proactively based on real-time data and “before stuff breaks.” Walsh would set targets and key performance indicators for his managers and then “see how they were doing — not based on a score card but actual real statistics, real facts.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: All of a sudden you had huge efficiencies coming into the operation which means you gave better end-service to the customer. At the same time you were able to reduce costs of providing the service. This was all happening in the cable sector probably in the years of 2002, 2003. Take that benefit and combine it with BPL and you are making that business case look much rosier.

These folks have scaled

Another similarity with cable is the problem utilities face in scaling data networks to cover entire utility footprints. Those are the same problems Walsh tackled with cable-based broadband, he reminded.

It takes “business nerve” to wait for the opportunities to ripen — and then capital to take advantage of the moment when it’s right.

Superior technology will win out, he added. “For us, ‘smart grids’ is nothing new.

“We deployed similar technology on communications networks and quickly realized the operational benefits when scaling is handled correctly.”

While Smartgrid2 works on landing utility contracts, the firm has started deploying MDU networks in the hospitality industry in Ireland .That work helps the firm add hands on experience with BPL plus generate revenue. ( www.mains4.com )

An invitation to Europe

Grids around Europe offer various challenges and “customizing hardware and software for individual markets is crucial,” said Walsh. “A partnership with the right European player can ease that pain.

“We are actively seeking to represent manufacturers over here.” Smartgrid2 partnered with a firm that’s got 180 trained, certified line crew workers “who excel on the physical installation of utility gear.

“Any executive struggling with how to hit Europe should get in touch. “If they are serious and can deliver, we’ll be happy to help them exploit the European opportunities we uncover through our role in the advisory and working groups.”

Smartgrid2 isn’t married to any manufacturer or chipset, Walsh reported, and that lets it “work in an unbiased way to select best-of-breed technologies.

As news of a weakened economy continues to saturate the media and bombard business owners with negative messages, one company has found a creative way of adapting its services to fit within the current economic conditions and help businesses succeed.

Smart Tips to Beat Internet Scammers

Last year a scam artist sent me a ‘second offer’ on a laptop I didn’t win on EBay. His price was far cheaper than the winning bid on EBay. I fell for the scam thinking it was an offer from a genuine Ebayer giving me a second offer. I lost about $200 to the scam. I have since become smarter on internet scams. Therefore I am offering you below some smart tips on how to beat similar scams.

1. If a scammer sent you a second chance offer directly to your email address on an item you didn’t win on EBay:

What to Do: Do not accept any offer outside EBay. Ensure all your communications are through EBay’s ‘Contact Seller’ form. That way, EBay keeps track of your communications with the seller.

2. An online seller provides you with a foreign phone number to call if you have any question:

What to Do: Foreign number is a red flag. Some scammers expect you may not call the number in order not to incur any long distance charges. Therefore, adopt a policy of “If I can’t reach you, I won’t do business with you”. Try and limit online transactions to your country of residency unless you are experienced in international business.

3. The Seller requests payment through either Western Union money transfer or Money Order.

What to Do: Do not make payment by Credit Card, Western Union or Money Order to foreign sellers. PayPal is better and a more secured option, at least for now. Anyone who does business on the Internet knows that once a scammer in a foreign country receives your Western Union money transfer, or Money Order, you absolutely have no way to get your money back. Unfortunately, some of the scammers in some foreign countries work closely with local bank staff in those countries. Do no expect any help from either the foreign bank or local officials there. All a scammer needs to receive Western Union money transfer is the code and an ID.

4. The Seller forwards a UPS’ Cash on Delivery (COD) form to you containing instructions, where you will fill in a Western Union Money Transfer Number (MTN), and shipping information. Normally, the form will instruct you to fill and submit the form and it will be sent directly to UPS’ database and not to the seller. It may further explain that a UPS staff will review the form and keep the Western Union code. A UPS staff will first inspect the item from the seller and receive it on your behalf for shipping, and finally release the Western Union code to the seller to receive his/ her payment. The form normally will look like an official UPS online form with logos, colors, trademarks. Everything will look genuine.

What to Do: According to UPS, they hardly do COD on international shipments. Therefore, this type of online UPS form is fake, and does not originate from UPS. If you receive a similar form by email do any of the following.

Cross-check The Web address:

Look for underscores, hyphens, extra letters, or numbers added to the web address to mimic an official website. For instance ‘www.ups.com’ is definitely not same as ‘www.ups1.com’. Also ‘www.westernunion.com’ is not same as ‘www.westernunionn.com’ (notice the extra ‘n’ added to ‘union’). If you are suspicious of the web address call the toll-free number listed on official website the scammer is trying to mimic to confirm if the forwarded web address belongs to them.

Find Out Where The Form Is Submitting:

Every web-based form you fill out submits the information either to a database or email address. You can check where the information is submitting as follows:

• Right-click on the form

• Click on ‘View Source’ (the HTLM code will appear, don’t be intimidated)

• If you are Techie look at the form header to see where the form is submitting. If the form is submitting to one of the free email clients like hotmail, yahoo, etc, treat as suspect. A reputable company cannot use free email addresses to receive customer orders and personal information.

If the email address belongs to a private company, say ‘y...@blabla.com’

• Take out the ‘yoyo@’ and replace it with ‘www’.

• Type the web address, example ‘www.blabla.com’ on your address bar, and pull up the website.

• Write down the IP address of the website.

• Go to www.dnsstuff.com and type in either the web or IP address. Dnsstuff.com is a free service that will give you detailed information on where a website is hosted.

• If the seller claims to be from say Canada and the site is hosted in say South Africa, you have reasons to probe further.

The biggest misconception is that all Internet frauds originate from Nigeria. This misinformation has prepared the minds of a lot of people to only treat online transactions from Nigeria as suspect. The reality is that internet scam artists are just everywhere, in every country. It’s an easy way to make money fast, so many people from various countries and backgrounds are attracted to it.

The guys who scammed my money were based in one of the break-away USSR republics. When I blocked my phone number and called them, one of them mistakenly picked up the phone, and greeted me in a clear soviet’s accent, then hung up the phone when I spoke. Definitely he was not African.

SMART Goal Setting

SMART goal setting is proven to be a very effective method of setting goals that are practical, effective and purposeful. So, what exactly is SMART goal setting? And what does SMART stand for?

S stands for Specific

It is important that your goal is as specific and as clearly defined as possible. There should be no conditionality or ambiguity to your goal. This will help create a clear point of focus and helps you channelize your energy properly. ‘I will generate new business tomorrow’ is an unspecific goal. On the other hand, ‘I will call up 10 new business contacts tomorrow’ is far more specific. The hallmark of a specific goal is that it includes the action that you need to take to achieve the goal.

M stands for Measurable

It is important that you are able to measure your goals. Else you will not be clear on the progress you have made. In the previous example, ‘I will call up 10 new business contacts tomorrow’ is a measurable goal. Either you do call 10 business associates or you do not. If you do not, you can easily measure how short you fell and create a plan to avoid these shortfalls.

A stands for Achievable

It is important that your goal is achievable. If it is not, you are likely to feel discount ant your progress and frustrated at your lack of results. It is therefore important to keep both your strengths and limitations in mind before you start your goal setting activity. In the same example, if you are someone who is mortified of reaching out to people, calling 10 people may be unachievable for you. On the other hand, if you no compunctions about calling people and reaching out to them, then 10 people would indeed be an achievable goal for you.

R stands for Realistic

When setting your goals, it is crucial that you are being realistic. If your goals are unrealistic, your likelihood of achieving them is very little. You will end up very frustrated dealing with failure and lack of results. In the previous example, is 10 people were to be substituted with 100 people, the goal would automatically be unrealistic. It would be humanly impossible to reach out to 100 people in a day and have result-oriented conversations with each one of them. Calling 10 people, on the other hand is a realistic goal.

Timely

Time is a very important component of SMART goal setting. Without a timeline, it would be impossible to measure your goals. In the same example, if the word ‘tomorrow’ was missing, the goal would become ambiguous and indefinable. Calling 10 business contacts is not the only important part of the goal, the timeline is equally important in helping you achieve the results you want.

Goal setting is important whether it is at work, in management, in sports or even just dealing with our personal commitment. With proper goal setting, it not only helps to realize our dreams, it also constantly serves as a motivation to us and also providing us with a sense of direction of where we should be focusing. Without goal setting and resolution, we would not be able to achieve much in the long run. All successful people are able to set and achieve their own goals which will in turn lead them to achieving higher goal setting.

Year 2007 is coming to an end and it is now time to set new goals/resolution for the year 2008. But before doing so, perhaps we should individually review the goal setting we have set for year 2007 and whether or not we have achieved all our goals. If yes, then my congratulations to you, and do keep up the good work, if not, perhaps we should review and understand the reasons for not being able to achieve our goal set for year 2007.

One of the most common reasons for not being able to realize our own dreams is due to the fact that most people often have the wrong misconception about setting dreams. Dreams are very often too unrealistic and not achievable in reality, for instance just merely dreaming to become a millionaire, dream of losing weight, dream of having a well toned body or even dream of having a condo but without actually properly plan and working hard for it will always be waiting for a dream to come true, where they are just waiting for things to happen and the same dream can remain year after year.

However, with proper planning by using SMART goal setting, we are able to quickly realize our dreams by focusing on both short term and long term goals where we are able to bring out our individual potential to its own limits.

Having a real understanding and being able to recognize our current standard, both our weakness and strength is the most crucial in the initial goal setting phase as we will then be able to realistically set goals which we will be able to realize eventually.

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. The following are the steps used for setting and realizing our dreams and we will be using Taichi sports to illustrate on the SMART Goal setting procedures.

Goal Setting – Using SMART guideline to help athletes in establishing seasonal goals:

Specific – Goals stated must be specific, behavioral terms, within a given time duration and define standard of success. Plan long term goal follow by mid term goal and finally short term goals to focus on achieving. An example is to achieve kicking above shoulder level in a slow & controlled manner during Taichi routine.

Measurable – Goals must be quantifiable and progress must be measurable. An example is computing the success rate of movement during practices to measure improvement.

Achievable – Goals set must be achievable by athlete’s capability, both physically and mentally.

Realistic – Goals set must be realistic. The above goal set must be realistic with proper training planning by the coach and commitment by the athlete during training.

Timely – Goal set must be timely, that is it must be measurable, realistic and achievable. For example, a time frame of 10 weeks for progress to be seen in the improvement of the above technique is easily achievable by most athletes with proper guidance and commitment during training.
